Pet Iguana
Is Health Risk

guanas are a popular exotic pet,
but many parents don't realize
they can pose a serious health
risk to children. The current
issue of Pediatrics reports on research
done at the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention showing an
increase in salmonella serotype Marina
that parallels the rise in iguana
imports to the United States.
Unfortunately, these trendy reptiles,
which actually make nice companions,
have been known to cause salmonella
in kids. In the CDC study, 88 percent
of patients had been exposed to an
iguana, but only 4 percent had actual-
ly touched the creature and just 12
percent of parents realized the pet may
have been the source of their child's
infection. Families who believed the
iguana was the source of a child's ill-
