Ideally, HDL levels should be least 45 and LDL levels less than 200. Berkeley researchers also noted lower levels of blood pressure and body fat among the higher mileage group, factors that also can minimize heart-disease risk. They found that faster runners had the lowest blood pressure of all, regardless of their weekly mileage. But for both men and women, running long distances was six times more effective at boosting HDL cholesterol than shorter, faster running. The benefits in blood cholesterol were noted in up to 50 miles of run- ning per week — a milestone that didn't necessarily provide immunity to weight gain. Because metabolism tends to slow with age, an increase in mileage (or equivalent exercise) of 1.5 miles per week each year may be necessary to keep the pounds from creeping up, said the investigators. Any type of aerobic exercise, including brisk walking, cycling, swimming or in-line skating, is likely to confer similar cholesterol and blood-pressure benefits. But if you're starting from ground zero, set a realistic goal: 30 minutes of brisk walking five times a week. The National Cholesterol Education Program advises that when diet and exercise fail to reduce LDL cholesterol below a certain level, drug treatment is indicated. Another-option that may be worth a try: grape juice. It apparently con- tains the same flavonoids that are in red wine that keep blood from clot- ting, thus reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to University of Wisconsin researchers. ❑ Happy Mothers Day!
