PINION

ask us what language we were speak-
ing.
We thanked him, declined the
phone card, and repeated our request
in English. I had already formed
wonderful memories of sitting on an
outside terrace, surrounded by my
Israeli family, with Jerusalem all
around me, watching my daughter
zBecome a bat mitzvah in a place
where there is no question as to
which direction the congregation
should face.
One week into our trip, our Amer-
ican family was busy traveling from
one shwarma stand to the next, hav-
ing cable 'TV withdrawal, and fully
enjoying the history and utter beauty
._hat is Israel.
As we approached Hadassah Hos-
pital on what was to be a typical tour
and viewing of the Chagall windows,
we discovered that the parking lot
entrance was blocked by security
guards. The hospital was closed to
visitors to make room for injury vic-
tims from a bombing in Jerusalem.
Most of the Americans on our tour
__bus asked: How far away was the
— bombing? Was it near our hotel?
`Were we in any danger?
My family had a much more seri-
ous concern. We had no idea where
in Jerusalem our 17-year-old daugh-
ter and her friends were traveling
with a USY Pilgrimage.
I jumped off the bus, ran to the
nearest pay phone, only to find that I
- didn't have the number of their hotel
with me. I didn't know how to call
information and I didn't have the
Israeli phone card necessary for using
a public telephone.
Next to me, a group of Canadian
teens were lining up, many hysterical
with fear, trying to call their parents
to assure them of their safety. My
Israeli cousins have a rule in their
home: If there is ever an incident of
danger in their midst, they must call
home to say they are fine, before
CNN reports the story.
One of the young Canadians saw
my frustration, and gave me her
phone card, someone else got the
number I needed, and I finally spoke
with my daughter's group leader, who
assured me that none of the USY
/1' ) ceen groups was scheduled to be in
the area of the bombing. But I also
knew that their itinerary was vague
and often spontaneous.
I then found out, incredibly, that
my daughter was on Mt. Herzl, the
very site where I was standing.
Within minutes, I saw my daugh-
