words for the afternoon festivities,
were Sue Ellen Simon, Harriet and Sid
Hiller, Linda and Joe Hebert, Beverly
and Bill Levy, Elaine and Mark
Schonberger, and Izzy and Fran.
It was just a short while out of the
hospital for Temple Israel's Rabbi M.
Robert Syme, speaking about Iz and
Fran after being introduced by his
son, Temple Beth El's Rabbi Daniel
Syme, who said, "And now, here's the
real Rabbi Syme!"
CONGRATS ... to Shirley Farber
... on her 85th birthday ... and to
Shirley and Al on their 63rd anniver-
sary.
MAIL DEPT. ... from Arlene Bar-
ris ... "Although Mr. Harold Finegood
has rightly included the Club 509,
owned by Benny Resh, grandfather of
myself and my brother Norm Miller,
among the many nightspots offering
name entertainment after World War
II, and although the 509 brought
many famous names to Detroit over
the years ranging from Sally Rand to
Don (Glasshead) Rickles, we're sorry
to report that Barbra Streisand never
played Club 509.
"Furthermore, our grandmother,
Ethel Resh, was not a singer and had
no connection with 'Auntie Dee' on
television.
"All of these reminiscences bring to
mind an occasion some 20 years ago
when my husband Bill and I were
watching Johnny Carson, and his
guest was Don Rickles. They were
talking about Mr. Rickles' early days
in show business when Don said that
he still remembered when he first
started out, playing a raucous old
night club in Detroit, the Club 509,
owned by this little guy named Benny
Resh who played a mean violin.
"It's nice to know that some folks
haven't forgotten their humble begin-
nings."
VINO PICKS ... by Roger Petri of
Mac & Ray's ... Meridian Chardonnay
Edna Valley Estate 1995 ... A bit
earthy on the nose, then the complex
flavors of figs and melons provide a
nice ride to a rich and elegant finish.
About $15.
COCO'S KORNER ... "Don't for-
get this Sunday, April 19 ... Even
though I won't be there, some of my
buddies will ... The swell folks at
Michigan Humane Society have their
yearly Bow Wow Brunch, noon to
3:30 at the Ritz-Carlton Dearborn ...
Wonder if the Mel Ball Quartet will
play one of my favorite songs, "I Love
The Look of You" (or I've never seen a
tree I didn't like). E
