Prior to The Object of My Affection,
Rudd originated the central role in
Alfred Uhry's Tony Award-winning
play The Last Night of Ballyhoo. He
played an Eastern European Jew, trans-
planted from Brooklyn to a German
Jewish household in 1939 Atlanta,
who "for the first time is experiencing
anti-Semitism within his own reli-
gion," explained Rudd.
"I am Eastern European Jewish and
I grew up in [the Midwest] and cer-
tainly felt alienated," he continued, "so
there was something really nice about
playing this character who was very

comfortable and proud of who he was.
I was never not proud, but there were
times when I was a little uncomfort-
able being a Jew. It definitely played a
part in the way that I interpreted the
character, and even in taking the role."
Paul Rudd has just started filming
another off-kilter romantic comedy —
200 Cigarettes co-starring Courtney
Love — before going into rehearsals
for the Lincoln Center production of
Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night
(he's playing Orsino) directed by
Nicholas Hytner.
"I suppose it is a little daunting that
I have to do the 'If music be the food
of love, play on' speech in front of
1,100 people," said the New York-
based actor, who studied classical the-
ater in England, "but there's some-
thing really great about being able to
say those lines, and it's not as difficult
as people think.
"It's a lot more challenging," added
Rudd, "to make the lines of some of
these horrible [television] pilots work
than it would be to play Shake-
speare. ,'
