"I don't think
ever do a full-
fledged autobiography," said Gel-
hart, married for more than 40 years
and the father of five. "I don't want
to use my life as an inkwell. For a
reasonably public person, I'm very
private about my feelings and about
my family and acquaintances.
"I guess I want to get out in print
what people want to get in life —
and that is to be understood.
"Mostly all writing is autobio-
graphical in. one way or another.
You're writing from your experiences
and your own point of view. It can't
help but be influenced by whatever
shaped you as a person."
In that vein, Gelbart believes his
comedy writing builds on his Jewish
heritage and experiences.
"Comedy has always been our
thing," he said It's a wonderful
weapon, and it's a wonderful defense
mechanism. Very often, we use it in
place of tears. We use
humor all day long. If -we
don't use it about an illness,
we use it about a situation
that is troubling.
"It's just part of our
equipment to get through
life. I cannot imagine people
— Jewish or otherwise —
who might be short in the
humor department and not
have that to get them
through
