Local and Israeli teens

fter five days together, Sher-
ri Berger, Shelly Oshrat and
Liron Horesh developed
their own inside jokes.
When 16-year-old Oshrat said,
/- "Put the bat back, Boris!" the three
erupted into giggles.
It's not clear why this was so hyster-
ical, but it had something to do with
last Friday night's dinner at Temple

A

Beth El, when the temple ran out of
name tags and Oshrat ended up with
one that said "Boris."
Oshrat and Horesh, both from
Israel's Central Galilee, were two of 47
Israeli teens visiting Detroit last week
as part of the Teen Mission To Israel's
mifgash (encounter) component.
Ninth-grader Berger, who played host-
ess to Oshrat and Horesh in her West
Bloomfield home, is one of 225 metro
Detroit teens who will be heading on
this summer's five-week mission, spon-

sored by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit and the Michi-
gan/Israel Connection. The Israelis
and metro Detroiters will travel
together in the Jewish state.
Helping prepare the salad for last
Sunday's dinner at the Bergers, the
two Israelis — neither of whom had
been to the United States before —
seemed quite at home.
Part of that is because, as Oshrat —
an outspoken and stylish girl whose
short hair is moussed up into little
spikes — insisted, Israel has
all the same amenities as the
United States. "We went to
Hillel Day School last week,
and the kids were asking if
we had movies in Israel!" she
mused.
Nonetheless, Oshrat and
16-year-old Horesh did
acknowledge some cultural
differences, noting they were
surprised by a few things
about American Jewish life.
For starters, wearing Jew-
ish stars. Both said they did-
n't expect to see American
Jewish teens sporting their
