Pukekawa Hill, in the heart of the

* Kelly Tarlton's Antarctica
Encounter and Underwater World is
another "must." Located on
Auckland's waterfront, the museum
features, in the first place, a replica of
the Antarctic shack from which Capt.
Robert Scott and his companions
went forth on their unsuccessful, and
fatal, attempt to reach the South Pole.
The poignant details of that heroic
venture are recalled in other artfiacts,
like Scott's diary, found on his frozen
body, photos and memorabilia of the
expedition. Heightening the sense of
Antarctica is a ride through a simulat-
ed, and extremely cold, frigid zone, in
an insulated car which conveys snug
passengers through a white world,
where live penguins blithely strut, as
only penguins can, on floes of real ice.
The Kelly Tarlton also boasts a large
aquarium, with a moving sidewalk
which conveys onlookers around huge
underwater tanks in which bright-col-
bred little fish cavort gracefully and big
sharks, among other predators of the
deep, glide slowly, casting baleful eyes, it
would seem, at spectators safe beyond (-1-\
the thick walls of glass.
* Sky Tower is the tallest structure in
the Southern Hemisphere, higher than
the Eiffel Tower. The topside views are
dizzying and spectacular — as is the
array of hundreds of slot machines, far
exceeding Donald Trump's, on a lower
level. Advice for the innocent: Don't bet
the casino slots; go for the blackjack
instead, but conservatively.
