A fellow Marine with William Gralnik.
Yisroel Brog.
"When he was 13, he liked a lot of
different things," Zhigun said.
"Rabbi Brog let him live with his
family."
According to Brog, Gralnik
excelled in his studies. "He grabbed
onto the knowledge of Judaism very
strongly," Brog said. "He became a
very good student. He knew how to
daven and how to read the Torah. He
learned all he needed to know."
Gralnik left the yeshiva and corn-
pleted the 10th grade in California
while living with his father. He
moved back to Michigan and was to
attend Berkley High School for his
junior and senior years, but his
ninth-grade records weren't released
by the yeshiva. Gralnik was forced to
attend classes through Berkley's adult
7 'education department.
Gralnik was especially close to his
cousin, Karena Voldman. "It is frus-
trating that this happened and we
were notified so long after it hap-
pened," she said, clasping a charm on
her necklace that holds his picture.
Voldman, born at the same
Indianapolis hospital, saw Titanic
with Gralnik when he was in town in
mid-March.
Said Zhigun through her tears,
trying to crack a smile, "He had so
many friends. He would drive 900
miles from his base to home, sit for
30 minutes, and then he would be
out with friends. He didn't even eat
properly when he was here.
"He never tried to change any-
one," she continued. "He took every-
one as they came. Every parent would
like him as a child."
According to his mother, Gralnik
said at the party thrown after he
completed boot camp, "I thought
this would be my only chance to do
anything and get anywhere. I chose
this to be somebody." ❑
