Walk into any health food store and
you'll know that the search for a
memory helper is a serious and very
lucrative business.
Shelves lined with ginkgo biloba,
vitamin E, and phosphatidylserine
,,,, (PS) highlight marketing slogans for
enhancing memory and brain power.
According to recent articles in the
Johns Hopkins Medical Letter, Nutrition
Action Healthletter, and Worsens Health
Advocate, traditional medicine has not
found any proof that these products
help memory in healthy people and
the evidence that it helps people with
mild memory loss is very preliminary.
Moreover, many of the products
haven't been adequately tested.
It appears then that the old adage,
"use it or lose it," also applies to
maintaining a healthy memory as
well as a healthy body. None of us
can stop the aging process and the
memory changes that result, but we
can take charge of our lifestyle and
minimize those chang es

down new memories. Both are not
very common.
"Put simply, forgetting is not nec-
essarily a sign of senility."
Interestingly, there's no link
between memory and intelligence;
some people are better at organizing
concepts and information, while oth-
ers are better at storing details so that
what is remembered, even about the
same event, can be very different.
There is, however, a difference
between diseases such as Alzheimer's,
senility, hardening of the arteries and
ordinary forgetfulness.
The mysteries of memory have
long eluded scientists, but research
has shown that normal memory is
complex.
Until recently, brain experts could
track the anatomical traces of human
memory only indirectly by studying
people whose memories were selectively
damaged from strokes or head injuries.
Using a new technique to record elec-
trical signals from individual neurons
involved in making long-term memory,
neurologists at UCLA probed the
human brain to see how individual
brain cells can remember what the con-
scious mind has forgotten.

he female obstetricians and certified nurse midwives of
Providence Hospital and Medical Centers have delivered
thousands of babies between them. And they've had a
• few of their own, as well. So if you think a woman's touch
would make your birth experience a better one, then you've
come to the right place.

Of course, no matter which gender you prefer (for your
doctor, that is) all of Providence's obstetricians and certified
nurse midwives are highly skilled and experienced. And they
work in some of the most accommodating, comfortable,
family-centered birth facilities in Michigan. Providence
Park in Novi and the New Life Center in Southfield offer the
comforts of home, with the reassurance of state-of-the-art
equipment standing by. For low-risk births, the Family
Birthing Center in Southfield offers a safer alternative
to home birth, providing queen-size beds, Jacuzzi tubs
and sleeping accommodations for family members.

For your birth experience, Providence has all the choices: the
medical professionals, the accommodations, the technology.
Just ask any woman who's been there—even just once.
