"You could buy a new Chevy coupe for $600, but who could afford one; a pity, too, because gas was only 11 cents a gallon. "In our day, cigarette smoking was fashionable, grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink and pot was some- thing you cooked in. Rock music was a grandma's lullaby and Aids were helpers in the principal's office. "No wonder we are so confused and there is such a generation gap. "But we survived. What better rea- son to celebrate?" LOOKING BACK ... As the expression goes ... "Good things come in small packages" ... And so it was with the ultra gourmet Novi restau- rant, Raphael's, that quietly opened back in 1982. Here was truly exquisite dining in a very elegant atmosphere ... with French cuisine for only 42 diners at one time ... booths and tables ... Those who went to Raphael's expected to spend at least three hours of epic moments in gastronomy. It was a gourmet restaurant that did not place all the emphasis on show at the expense of its food ... Surely ele- gance symbolized by fire and ice is fake elegance ... Raphael's was not guilty of this ... The total concentra- tion was on perfect quality food, excellently prepared ... and impeccable service. Raphael's was classic cuisine ... with preparation by then youthful Chef de Cuisine Keith Famie, now executive chef at Forte in Birmingham, owned by the same Wisne family that had Raphael's ... Keith, at the time, was well noted in fine-dining circles for his many appearances on WXYZ-TV's "Kelly & Co." among others. Everything at Raphael's was made from scratch ... No such thing as pow- ders or starters ... unheard of things by someone justly prideful of his fine- dining preparations as Keith was and still is. Achille Biance, a waiter then at Raphael's, is now maitre d' at Too Chez in Novi. ❑
