their development of a nuclear arse-
nal.
Splicing the two plots together is
the omniscient presence of rival intel-
ligence agencies — spies and infor-
mants following their own private
agendas and marching orders.
If there is a work of fiction out
there half as interesting as this intrigu-
ing bombshell, I've yet to read it.
Which inevitably leads to a ques-
tion. Is any of this true? And if any of
it is true, where do we go from here? I
predict that many a librarian and
bookseller will be hard-pressed to
come up with a proper category for
The Gold of Exodus. Is it history?
Archaeology? Espionage? Religion? Or
— please, God, no — New Age Meta-
physical Speculation? The book itself
comes full circle to its own starting-off
point and then chooses to remain
there.
I'm intrigued by everything Blum
puts forward and I think he deserves
high marks — very high marks,
indeed — for writing a page-turner of
the highest order. But the earnest
reader who opens these pages should
be advised to take their content with a
dose of salt as large as Lot's unfortu-
nate wife.

lion dollar project called Peace

sophisticated early missile warning
systems.
131um noted with obvious irony,
"You scratch away any political
story in the Middle East and you
get religion and the other way
around.
"If I were a betting man, I'd
think that the Saudi regime is in its
last days," he said. 'If it were not
for Israel, you'd say, 'great.' They're
corrupt and I don't think they
deserve to be in power. But then
you say, 'Islamic fundamentalism
and the atomic bomb."'
The "gold of Exodus" may or
may not exist, but the weapons sys-
tem surrounding Jabal al Lawz is
very real. And that's exactly why the
Saudis probably won't let any
archaeologist near it and why
Blum's book is much more than a
good story. ❑
