For All Of Your Seder and Pesach Week Dinner Feasts Prepared By Our Fabulous Chefs! as Felix, who also portrayed these characters in the popular 1970-'75 television series. "I think Klugman's a better Oscar than I am," said Walter Matthau, "and I think Lemmon's a better Felix than Tony. As objectively as I can look at it, Klugman is Oscar Madison, whereas I don't feel that I am." For director Howard Deutch, it wasn't counteracting any memories of the TV series that worried him. It was dealing with the long shadow of the first Odd Couple film (1968) as well as differentiating this movie from the recent Grumpy movies, which was a particular challenge since Deutch directed Grumpier Old Men. (That film also featured a wedding of Matthau and Lemmon's children.) Neither Oscar nor Felix has changed much personality-wise since their last encounter. "They're completely, emotionally different movies," said Deutch. "This movie is almost farcical, and I find there's very little sentimentality. I had to use a lot of restraint just not to inject it with more sentimentality, because I'm used to that. "I see Neil Simon's writing and Felix and Oscar as pretty unique," he continued, "and the fact that the Grumpy movies were cast with Jack and Walter in the roles of two charac- ters who were nitro and glycerin — opposites — took the cue from the original Odd Couple." If The Odd Couple II is a box-office hit, Simon and Deutch plan to reteam with Matthau and Lemmon for another sequel. "I have an unusual idea of what to do with it," Neil Simon said teasingly, "but wait and see." "Neil knows," said Jack Lemmon about the new sequel's plot, "but he won't tell us." But Walter Matthau has hi: own idea for The Odd Couple III. "I would die," he said slyly, "and come back as a ghost to haunt Felix."
