Minister is urging a drastic cut-
back in allocations to the Volcani
Center.
Professor Nachum Snapir,
director of Israel's Agricultural
Research Organization, warns
about the consequences of such a
policy. He points out that the
traditional cultivated areas in the
center of the country are falling
victim to growing urbanization,
and that much research is
required to develop new ones in
the arid Negev,
"It could be carried out by the
world-famous scientists at
Volcani," says Professor Snapir,
"if they are allocated the funds
they require to do the job. If
not," he concludes, "Israeli agri-
culture may collapse." ❑

Group Wants
Refugee Conference

Zurich (JTA) — The Swiss
Federation of Jewish Women called
on Switzerland to hold a conference
on refugee policy. Among the issues
that should be discussed at the meet-
ing, the group said, is Switzerland's
attitude toward Jewish refugees dur-
ing World War II.
Switzerland expelled more than
30,000 Jews during the war — most
of whom died — but at the same
time, the country provided haven
to some 25,000 Jewish refugees,
who survived the war together
with Switzerland's 20,000 Jewish citi-
zens.
