Although no magic allocation
formulas exist, a significant body
of research as well as of successful
solutions do provide clear direction.
When a private foundation in
Portland, Ore., allocated $2,000
carte blanche to any youngster
to attend the community's day
school, enrollment doubled in one
year.
Comtnunities that invest in creative
learning experiences (family weekends,
summer camping, Jewish travel and
Israel experience programs) rather
than brick edifices, enjoy increased
levels of involvement, including fund
raising.
Our local congregations have
recently requested an allocation of
$1.5 million to assist supplementary
education programs. Are not such
efforts more consonant with Jewish
values and priorities than the upgrad-
ing of physical fitness facilities? Why
not (even extravagantly) spend funds
to create educational programs befit-
ling.the leadership community of
North American Jewry?
Some may say we can do both. Per-
haps we can, but this should not
become a rationalization for inaction
and delay.
Children grow and develop; they
— and we — cannot wait. Why not
transform what for many children
are tedious lessons filled with irrele-
vance? ❑
