B NAI B'RITH

WHO WE ARE:

B'nai B'rith has just completed the most massive transformation in its 154-year
history. With new program directions, members in 56 countries; and new regional
offices in 18 key communities in the United States; B'nai B'rith is poised to be the
premier Jewish organization for the 21st century..

Jewish Academy. The basic orientation
can be described as traditional egalitari-
an — that is, all students will be
trained for competence in traditional
Jewish liturgy and ritual and participa-
tion will be equal for all.
Yet we know that these goals can be
expressed in different ways. As such, we
C' expect to provide alternative minyanim
for students who desire, for example, a
mechitzah, or for those who prefer a cre-
ative service. The administration will
welcome diversity of expression so long
as the basic unity of the student body
can be maintained.
The most immediate challenge for
the Jewish Academy is the hiring of a
headmaster. The candidate we seek will
possess depth of both general and Judaic
knowledge and will be adept at educa-
tional administration. He or she will be
a role model of academic accomplish-
ment, personal integrity and commit-
ment to an observant Jewish lifestyle.
We are open to candidates from all
the movements who can identify with
and promote the values of the Jewish
Academy. Preferably, the administration
will be in place by this summer so that
the school will have a full year of orga-
nization, recruitment and development
prior to opening.
The greatest challenge, of course, is
to attract students for the school. Our
first students will always have the special
status of being chalutzim — true pio-
neers of their own community and
models of general and Jewish accom-
plishment. We have many dreams for
them — that they be mentshen, that
they form their own diverse and com-
mitted community and that the school
they create with us will become a sacred
center of Torah learning and observance.
The students will need much help
from us, their parents, teachers and fans.
Our commitment to excellence will not
C. come cheaply, and yet we as a commu-
nity must strive to make this experience
affordable for all teens.
The Federation has already made a
major commitment to see this project to
fruition; more substantial donors will
need to step forward to make the Jewish
Academy available for all.
The foundation of this new school is
a very ambitious project, the type which
": can energize and strengthen our entire
community. It is a dream which I pray
will soon become as real as desks, bright
eyes and lively discussion.
"May the words of Torah be sweet in
our mouths and in the mouths of our
children, so that we may all become
knowers of Your Name and learners of
Your Torah for its own sake."
