WILLIAM C. APPEL, 77, of Hunting-
ton Woods, died March 28. Mr. Appel
was an automotive parts executive.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn
Appel; son and daughter-in-law,
William and Sharon Appel of Mor-
ganville, N.J.; grandchildren, Stacy and
David. He was the loving father of the
late Cindy Appel.

MARVIN L. BARKIN, 75, of West
Bloomfield, died March 30. Mr. Barkin
was a scrap metal executive. He was a
member of Perfection Lodge of the
Mason's, B'nai B'rith, the Greater
Detroit Scrap Dealers Association and
earned the Purple Heart during World
War II.
Mr. Barkin is survived by his wife,
Madeline Barkin; sons and daughters-
in-law, Richard and Marilynn Barkin,
Bruce Barkin, Steven and Teri Barkin of
West Bloomfield; daughter, Janice
Barkin; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Laurie,
Ariana and Alexis; mother-in-law, Char-
lotte Sherman.
Interment at Nusach Harie. Arrange-

DR. SIMON BERENT, 86, of South-
field, died March 29.
He is survived by his wife, Leah
Berent; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth
and Mark Koppelman of Franklin; son
and daughter-in-law, Dr. David and
Tish Berent of West Bloomfield; brother
and sister-in-law, Dr. Louis and Ann
Berent of Southfield; grandson, Marc
Kramer.

FAY BOOKSTEIN, 94, former Detroi-
ter of Laguna Hills, Calif., died March
24. She sang in the Halevy Choir under
the direction of Dan Frohman. She was
active in the Pioneer Women, Hadassah
and Jewish National Fund.

JACK COHEN, 80, formerly of Oak
Park of Hollywood, Fla., died March
17. He was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Cohen was the owner of an auto-
mobile parts business until he retired
and moved to Florida.
He is survived by his sons and
da,ughter-in-law, Steven, Cliff and
Diana; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea
and Don Bastian; five grandchildren.

DR BRUCE LEONARD DANTO,
70, former Detroiter of Fullerton, Calif,
died March 21. Dr. Danto's family were
founding members of Temple Israel in
Detroit. During the 1940s, Bruce
Danto taught religious school at Temple
Israel. He later served on the board of
trustees of the temple and established a
security committee for the temple.
Bruce Danto graduated from Wayne
State University with three degrees: a
bachelor of arts in sociology in 1951, a
master's in social work in 1953 and a
doctor of medicine in 1961. Among his
many awards, he was listed a one of the
nation's top physicians in The Best Doc-
tors in America 1992-93. He has pub-
lished 10 books and over 150 articles.
He began practicing psychiatry in
1965. In 1967, he founded the Suicide
Prevention and Crisis Intervention Cen-
ter in Detroit of which he was the direc-
tor. He was also president of the Ameri-
can Association of Suicidology from
1979-80. As a social worker, he devel-
oped and ran a family home care pro-
gram through Northville State Hospital.
In California, Dr. Danto had a pri-
vate psychiatric practice and was on the
staff of the St. Jude Medical Center of
Fullerton. He also served as the medical
director of the Behavioral Services
department at St. Jude's.
He is survived by his wife of 44
years, Joan Danto of Fullerton; sons and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey and Robin
Danto of West Bloomfield, Steven
Danto of San Diego; daughters and
son-in-law, Susan Danto of Fullerton,
Lisa and Arlin Wasserman of Suttons
Bay, Mich.; grandchildren, Sandy,
Michael, Shayna, Allison, Paul and
Jesicah; brother, Dr. Arthur Danto of
New York.
Services were held in California; a
memorial service will be held at Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield on May 3 at 1
