LOOKING BACK ... Normandie,
Second Boulevard and W. Grand
Boulevard ... If you liked the old Nor-
mandie on West Grand Boulevard,
you would have liked the newer Nor-
mandie that much better, if only
because the famous hamburgers
seemed to taste better in the tonier
surroundings ... The ambience
remained just the same, with the con-
stant influx of colorful GM and adver-
tising folk, commercial artists, and
groups stopping en route to and from
the Fisher Theatre, as well as actors
and actresses from the current plays,
whose signed pictures shone down
from the Normandie's walls.
Back in 1982, Dimitri Syros and
Manuel Chavez were together again
after 24 years ... In 1958, Dimitri was
a cook and Manuel a busboy at the
popular Roostertail off East Jefferson.
The '82 togetherness was when
Dimitri owned Dimitri's of South-
field at Southfield and 10 Mile ...
and Manuel was his new general
manager ... hosting evenings and
making those great Caesar salads for
which people followed him from all
parts of the city.
Both Dimitri and Manuel were at
the Roostertail two weeks after it orig-
inally opened ... and there through a
succession of great names in show
business.
Manuel's fame as a masterful maker
of Caesar salads was wide-spread ...
Many celebrities looked for him when
in town ... His chilled lettuce and gar-
lic that were woven into the bowl
combined with a fabulous talent to
tenderly mix the many fresh ingredi-
ents that went toward making his final
masterpiece.
Today, Dimitri has Jimmy Dimitri's
on Harper ... and Manuel is owner of
Ristorante Di Modesta, run by his son
Marco and General Manager Jaye
Cooper, on Northwestern Highway. [1]
