omegranates on the seder
plate? Sure. Dates, olives
and hummus, too.
The Michigan Region
B'nai B'rith Youth Organization took
advantage of the proximity of Passover
and this year's celebration of Israel's
50th by hosting a Yom Ha'atzma'ut
(Independence Day) seder last Sunday
at the Kahn Community Center in
West Bloomfield. Over 130 teens
from 8th to 12th grade learned the
symbolism of the Zionist seder plate,
wrote messages bound for the Western
Wall, saw videos about the airlift of
Ethiopians to Israel and a memorial to
slain Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, and squeezed in some Israeli
dancing. Detroit's shalicha, Yael
Waxman, supplied the haggadot.
Allison Buchman, assistant director
of BBYO, said the group wanted to
do something that would kick off
another year for the chapter and teach
young people about Israel. It is the
chapter's first-ever seder. ❑
