University (with a bachelor's degree in
music education from Oakland
-0( University), has chosen not to perform
shows in support of it.
Opting to wait until she completes
her degree, she realizes the tremendous
odds she faces. "I just felt like it was
ready to be born. So I just decided to
go ahead and finish it and do whatev-
er promotion I could in my spare
time," Roman-Pitt says.
Though she may play some live
dates in the spring and summer, she
has been afforded the luxury of not
having to tour immediately behind
-3( her third release (her first album came
out in 1974, the second followed in
1985, each selling about 3,000-4,000
copies) through the generosity of her
spouse, Barry, a retail businessman
-3( who financed the CD.
In recent years, this Oak Park-bred,
Ann Arbor-based Jewish composer
and mother of two (son Jesse is a
junior at Skidmore College, daughter
Joanna will be graduating soon from
Green Hills School) has not been lack-
ing for other projects.
"Remember," a traditional:style
Chanukah song she wrote for the
Eastern Michigan University women's
chorus last year, took top honors at a
competition sponsored by Toronto's
Amadeus Choir. Contestants submit-
ted original Chanukah and Christmas
compositions, and Roman-Pitt beat
out 179 competitors.
In addition, she's been approached
by an Ann Arbor-based dance troupe
about adapting her composition "I
Am Of Sarah" for the stage. A classi-
cally themed song cycle about
women's roles in the Jewish communi-
ty through the ages, it was commis-
sioned by Temple Israel in 1995 and
has been performed by an area
women's choir.
Roman-Pitt's connection with the
Jewish community runs much deeper
than merely composing musical works
about it. A member of Temple Beth
Israel, Roman-Pitt observes Shabbat
and attends services fairly regularly.
She is also a member of her syna-
gogue's sisterhood and Hadassah.
