Neither a crooner nor a belter, she defies categorization on her new CD, Peace Of The River. With its nearly 50-50 split \-'---->tween originals and covers, Roman- Pitt's latest work recalls Cassandra Wilson's New Moon Daughter. But whereas Wilson's delivery is smoky noir cool, Roman-Pitt's voice is crys- talline and more somber. It also would be a safe bet that Wilson's repertoire has never included material based on ancient Indian scriptures or campfire songs. —' Peace Of The River boasts both. The title track was first learned by Roman- Pitt, 48, as a Girl Scout at the age of 10. "It just kind of came back to me as an adult, and somehow, as it came back, it turned more and more strange until finally I came up with this arrangement," says Roman-Pitt. Elsewhere, like any interpreter worth her set list, Roman-Pitt takes :.fisting material and reinvents it. Taking big risks, she recasts the Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun" as a plaintive piano lullaby, gives "The Sunny Side Of The Street" the torch treatment, injects the title track with gospel flair and gently swings "Look To Today" (whose lyrics come from the ancient scripture Upanishads). Roman Pitt's original compositions are on the whole upbeat affairs imbued with a positive, uplifting, lyrical twist. Curveballs like the gorgeous bossa nova "She Walks Like A Whisper" that recalls Wilson's "Solomon Sang" and "Where The Sky Meets The Future," featuring Ed Sarath's brilliant fluglehorn work — keep things from getting too formu- laic. Stylistically, the music, performed by a crack squad of Ann Arbor's finest, is pure jazz. Roman-Pitt's vocals are, however, pure old-school folk. Imagine Joan Baez with half a martini under her belt, backed by the McCoy Tyner Trio, and that's the CD's lead-off track, "I Forgot About The Stars." From the get-go, pianist Rick Roe sets a breezy cushion for Roman-Pitt to rest her voice upon. The track, with its "stop and smell the roses" message, sidesteps New Age sappiness in favor of a torchy flavor and a Porteresque lyrical spirit. Roman-Pitt's material selection was not the only risky thing about this release. In a musical climate where the success of an independently released CD such as Peace Of The River is con- tingent on touring, Roman-Pitt, a graduate student at Eastern Michigan - Mock Chopped Liver Gefilte Fish Loaf w/baby carrots (serves 6 people) Matzoh Balls (large) Chicken Soup w/baby carrots (serves 12-15 people) .
