Bondi (1833-1907) came from
Vienna to Kansas, where early on
he established himself as quite an
adventurer. His parents found work
for him as a store clerk; Bondi had
no interest in that, however, and
tried to join various expeditions
around the world.
In 1855, he began working with
the abolitionist forces of John
Brown. Bondi kept detailed records
of his travels both with John Brown
and later during the Civil War,
when he served with the Union
Army. Throughout his life, he
remained a leading spokesman
against slavery, which he labeled a
moral evil. He spent the end of his
life in Salina, Kan., where he was
an attorney and businessman.

The board spent most of its time,
however, working for Jewish civil
and religious rights throughout the
world, and aiding poor Jewish com-
munities in Russia, Morocco and
pre-state Israel. Probably the organi-
zation's most famous gesture was
appealing to President Abraham Lin-
: coin after Gen. Ulysses S. Grant
forbade Jews from serving in certain
areas during the war. Later, the
Board of Delegates merged with
the Reform movement, where it
remained a separate entity until
1925.
