Detroit Serves
The Community

I was very interested to read your por-
trait of the University of Michigan
STaR Program ("Rising STaR" Feb. 6).
The growth of the graduate pro-
grams which prepare professionals for
the wide range of leadership positions `—`
in the Jewish community shows the
maturation of the North American
Jewish community.
As the Jewish community becomes
more diverse and faces the challenge
of sustaining meaningful Jewish life in
an open society, the need for imagina-
tive, energetic and well-skilled profes-
sionals grows.
In 1969, the Benjamin S. Horn-
stein Program at Brandeis University
was the first graduate program
designed specifically to train Jewish
communal professionals in a course of
study integrating contemporary Jewish
studies, professional skills and classical
Judaica.

PROJECT

STAR

Our 450 alumni work in settings
thought the Jewish community. We
have approximately 40 full-time stu-
dents (not 20 as stated in the article)
and offer continuing education pro-
grams to lay and professional leaders.
Our students can specialize their stud-
ies in philanthropy and fund-raising,
advocacy and community relations or
Jewish education.
Most are "generalists," prepared to
work in JCCs, federations, youth
organizations, synagogues and the
range of settings in which Jewish
activity takes place.
We are encouraged by the develop-
ment of the STaR Program and others.
Jewish communal service is a field
which offers professionals the oppor-
tunity for rewarding careers and wel-
comes committed and competent peo-
ple.
Detroit has long been recognized as
a community in which lay and profes-
sional leaders work effectively and are
not afraid to experiment. Your Federa-
tion's support of graduate education
for Jewish communal professionals is
to be admired.
Professor Susan L. Shevitz
Director, Hornstein Program in
Jewish Communal Service,
Brandeis University
