library hours, contacts and profession-
al affiliations.
To help with mailings, the pair
recruited Sylvia Cantoni, the librarian
at Temple Beth El.
"Libraries are traditionally coopera-
tive institutions and this is our oppor-
tunity to network," Cantoni said.
The surveys were mailed to 60
Jewish institutions in greater Detroit,
Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids and
Lansing. Also included was a letter
inviting the affiliated professionals and
volunteers to the association's meeting
last Sunday at the Kahn Jewish
Community Center Library in West
Bloomfield.
For the first time in years, quarterly
attendance rose from nine active mem-
' bers to 16 professionals and volunteers
from synagogues, public libraries, the
Agency for Jewish Education, the JCC,
Jewish Vocational Service and the
University of Michigan. They used the
meeting to share ideas, seek support
from colleagues and help with problem
solving.
While Erlich tired to find "happy
homes" for backlogged periodicals,
/— Barbara Rosen of the University of
Michigan sought materials for down-
loading on the Judaic Web site cur-
rently under construction by the uni-
versity's Academic Outreach
Department. Others came to identify
potential new members or to help
plan future programs. By networking,
they hope to strengthen their presence
in their individual institutions.
"I feel there needs to be a group of
people working together in the Jewish
libraries in Detroit," said Leslie
Rosenbaum of West Bloomfield, who
serves as media specialist at Kimball
High School in Royal Oak and as
chairperson of the library at
Congregation B'nai Moshe.
The association is considering an e-
mail discussion group, a newsletter, an
inter-library loan program and a com-
munity-wide reading program for
Jewish children. The resource directo-
ry is scheduled for completion in
September.
The next meeting, scheduled for
May, will include the nomination and
election of new officers. Current offi-
cers are Mae Weine, president; Larry
Wember, vice president and program
chairman; Bert Wember, recording
secretary; and Anna Mikel, treasurer
and membership chairperson.
