A Stronger Spine

Jewish library professionals
and volunteers discover the beauty of networking.

hey met last year in
Cleveland at the National
Convention of the
Association of Jewish
Libraries, drawn by their love of
Judaic literature and a yearning for
interaction with like-minded people.
Before they parted, Mae Weine, 86,
of Oak Park, and Rachel Erlich, 23, of
Farmington Hills, exchanged phone
numbers in hopes of reigniting the orga-
nization's local affiliate in metro Detroit.
For Weine, the long-time librarian
at Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses, the commitment reawakened
the spirit that had led her to develop
the renowned Weine Classification
System currently used in Judaic
libraries across the country. She also
helped found the Jewish Library

"I strongly believe that together, as
a community, our resources are
tremendous and varied," said Erlich,
an Illinois native who joined Temple
Israel last summer. "It behooves us to
work together to strengthen our per-
sonal and professional relationships to
promote library use in the Jewish
community."
For months, the two women have
been developing a communication sys-
tem for the JLA that includes compil-
ing a resource guide to local libraries
in synagogues, community centers,
day schools and colleges, as well as
public, academic, research and special
libraries with Judaic collections.
"We need more knowledge among
the general population that these
libraries exist," said Weine, past presi-
dent of the Association of Jewish
Libraries International. "There are
thousands of Jews in the metro

that set us apart...

from new construction

management, to

furniture on the cutting

edge of design, to the

simple addition of the

Association (JLA) of Metropolitan

For Erlich, a University of
Michigan graduate who directs the
high-tech library and media center at
Temple Israel, the prospect offered an
opportunity to glean information
from more experienced colleagues
while tapping into treasures at other
local Jewish libraries.

Detroit area who never go to a syna-
gogue or are unaffiliated who might
like to use these libraries."
To kick off the networking effort,
Erlich and Weine formulated a three-
page survey to gather information on
