ntil recently, Julie Trepeck
harbored a common mis-
conception: Violence within
relationships is uncommon
in the Jewish community
"I would never expect that this
would happen in this community
happen here," she said. "The reality is
that violence and abuse in relation-
ships know no bounds of sex, race or
religion."
Rautbort defines, in a handbook for
workshop participants, the scope of
dating violence: It is "the intentional
use of abusive tactics and physical
force in order to obtain and maintain

because you're around good people,"
said Trepeck, a senior at Temple
Israel's religious school. "I wouldn't
think that someone who's a friend
could do this."
Stacey Rautbort, a social worker
who runs workshops on dating vio-
lence at Jewish Family Service, hears
that all the time.
"Because the Jewish community is
so strong, there is a sense that it can't
partner." She makes sure
that her students clearly
understand the definition
as they hit the dating cir-
cuit.
JFS began its relation-
ship violence workshop
two years ago, but in her
first 18 months at the
agency, Rautbort has made
the program her own. She
secured a grant from the
Hudson's Circle of Giving
that covered the cost of
preparing the handbook
and keychains imprinted with the JFS
telephone number, where people can
call for help. The Circle of Giving, a
division of the department store chain,
gives grants to community programs.
Rautbort's program is an interac-
tive, educational forum of group dis-
cussions, video presentations, role
playing and a question-and-answer •
session.
