Samuel S. Novetsky, 85, of
Southfield, died March 17. He was
born in Poland and came to the
United States at age 5, settling in
Detroit.
He studied mechanical engineer-
ing at University of Detroit. Upon
graduating, he worked
for Albert Kahn &
Associates. He then
joined the family busi-
ness, Tamaren Beef
Company, ultimately
becoming president.
He received his
Jewish education at the
Farnsworth Yeshivah.
His affiliation with the
Young Israel movement
covers 66 years of ser-
vice, beginning when
he joined the Young
Israel of Melbourne
Samuel S.
Center. A youth leader
at 21, he organized
275 Young Israel boys and girls into
junior, intermediate and senior
youth groups. In 1936, he was elect-
ed gabbai and first vice president of
the Young Israel of Melbourne
Center. From 1936-39, he served as
president of Young Israel of the
Woodward Jewish Center. He was
also president of the Young Israel of
Northwest Detroit from 1956-58.
In 1966, Mr. Novetsky was the
recipient of the Young Israel Man of
the Year award. In 1971, he was
awarded the Shofar Award by the
National Council of Young Israel in
New York. In 1995 he again
received the Man of the Year award,
this time from Young Israel of

Greenfield. He will be especially
remembered as the ba'al tokeah on
Rosh Hashanah at Young Israel of
Oak Park.
He is survived by his wife, Gail
Novetsky; sons and daughter-in-law,

of Royal Oak; daugh-
ters and son-in-law,

Potomac, Md.,

Key, Fla., died March 21. Mrs. Bronson
was a past president of Na'amat USA,
formerly Pioneer Women.
She is survived by her husband of 69
years, Charles Bronson; grandchildren,
Daniel and Honey Bronson, Michael
and Jane Bronson, Keith Bronson,
Andrew Bronson; great-grandchildren,
Jennifer, Benjamin and Sarah Bronson
and daughter-in-law, Claire Bronson of
Southfield. Mrs. Bronson was the lov-
ing mother of the late Judge S. Jerome
Bronson and the late Judge Kenneth
Bronson.
Interment at Beth El Memorial Park.

BEULAH APPEL, 84, of Bloomfield

SYLVIA BERGER, 82, of Oak Park,

Hills, died March 19. Mrs. Appel
was a member of the Infant Service
Group and the Northwest Child
Rescue.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Robert and Elaine
Appel of Bloomfield Hills; daughter,
Susan Appel of Seattle; grandchildren,
Melisa Kay, Philip Appel and Kareen
Donegan, Craig Appel, Peter
Harming; great-granddaughter, Sara
Donegan Appel. Mrs. Appel was the
beloved wife of the late Dr. Philip
Appel; the loving mother of the late
Dr. Nancy L. Kay.
Interment at Oakview Cemetery.

HENRY GERSHOWITZ, 73, of Ann
Arbor, died March 21. For the past 10
years, Mr. Hershowitz was the director
of National Legal Lab in Okemos. Prior
to 1988, Mr. Gershowitz was a profes-
sor of human genetics at the University
of Michigan. He was also very active
with Congregation Beth Israel and
served two terms as president of congre-
gation.
He is survived by his wife of 48
years, Mrs. Beverly Gershowitz; son,
Arthur Gershowitz of Ann Arbor;
daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and
Sheldon Katz of Peoria, Ill., Emily and
Jerry Cole of Covington, Ky., Laura
Gershowitz of Chicago; grandchildren,
Rachel and Benjamin Katz; sister and
brother-in-law, Rhoda and Fred
Hainbach of Woodside, N.Y.; brother,

died March 20.
