We figured if Congress
could make IRAs a better deal,
so could we.
Kaufman's biggest concern is the millage
election in August.
/---
"The Jewish community is part of
the whole metro Detroit area in
which SMART provides 10 million
rides. The businesses need workers.
The seniors and people with disabili-
ties like the freedom to get around,"
said Kaufman. "Jewish voters, like
myself and my mother, should see
SMART as being the only public
transportation out in those areas
offering the ability to provide people
a service that gives a decent quality of
life. If any community, given its his-
tory, should. recognize the need to
pay a few dollars a year to benefit the
entire community, it should be the
Jewish community."
Kaufman, his wife, Elaine Lenart,
and sons Sean, 16, and Sam, 11,
attend Bet Chaverim Temple in
Canton Township. He is a former
trustee of Jewish Vocational Service.
His mother, Marjorie Kaufman, lives
in Southfield and his father, Charles
Kaufman, lives in Plymouth.
Until the election, Kaufman is
intent on stepping out into the sub-
urbs to spread the message of
SMART's successes and to continue
to offer clean buses, courteous dri-
vers and prompt service.
"I hope I have contributed to the
successes SMART has received and
I'm just tickled pink that SMART is
in great shape," said Kaufman. "My
goal is the same as it was the day I
took the job — to make SMART
public transportation better today
than it was yesterday, and better
tomorrow than it is today."
Kaufman seems confident that
voters will recognize SMART's via-
bility by passing the millage in
August. And if it doesn't pass?
"It boggles my mind to think about
what this area will be like without
those 10 million rides," said Kaufman.
"It will not be as friendly, as happy or
as economically viable."
