"Favors are usually personalized with the name and date of the party and the cost can add up quickly if the child has 100 friends," Cherkasky points out. On average, she advises families to budget about $3,000 for decorations for a party of 100-150 people, but decorations can get much more cost- ly, especially when lighting effects are involved. "Lighting technicians won't work for less than $500," she says. For a recent bar mitzvah party held at Cranbrook, she hired a professional to produce a laser light show. On the walls of a large hall, Cherkasky suggests using custom- made stencils which, when inserted in lighting tresses, produce giant sil- houettes. Hanging cen- terpieces from a high ceiling is another way of filling in the space. She has also used indi- vidual spotlights aimed at each table which can give another kind of drama. "The Ritz Carlton is equipped to spotlight each table in their ball- room, but they charge $25 a table for this effect," she says. "When you enter the room, you don't see the walls, the chairs or the carpeting. It's just the tables, the c'\ / flowers, and the reflection from the mirrors shining out of the darkness."
