vous system is at a level of fascination
... for me," says Rosenblum, who has
been working with patients with brain
tumors for the past 28 years. "I just
love the brain and I admire the cre-
ation of this organ, which is life, real-
ly.
"I love the nervous system. It's phe-
nomenal to me that people are nor-
mal. And it's mesmerizing that there's
such a variation among people based
on genetics and makeup."
Rosenblum spent several hours at
the operating table where he worked
to improve the quality of life of a 30-
year-old west Michigan woman who
was paralyzed on the left side due to a
brain tumor.
"More and more tumors are in
harder and harder locations to surgi-
cally remove, and in younger people,"
says Rosenblum, whose department
handles some 250 brain tumor
patients per year.
But it's certainly not all doom and
gloom. He and his staff offer hope.
"My statement to a patient with a
brain tumor is, 'Don't believe anything
you already have heard or read. You're
not a number. Anything you've heard
is a generality. You're not a statistic,
you're a person and each tumor is dif-
ferent."
The patient from west Michigan
received local chemotherapy "wafers"
that were placed in her brain. "I
removed more than 90 percent of the
tumor. We've given her a longer time
to live in reasonably good shape."
Times have changed since the '60s
and '70s, says Rosenblum. "Some-
times we do operations where the
patient is awake. If a tumor is growing
in the brain in an area that controls
speech, then we need to talk to the
patient while operating so we know
we're not damaging the patient's
speech.
"There are a lot of things we cando
safely now," says Rosenblum, noting
that he and his team often use ultra-
sound during operations to remove
tumors. "We frequently treat patients
with novel types of treatment that are
not available in many places around
the country. This is possible because
we are a member of a national group
of brain tumor centers funded by the
National Cancer Institute to develop
and first use new treatments along
with our associates at Johns Hopkins
and Harvard (university hospitals).
"We're aggressive in trying to attack
these tumors and we're as successful as
possible in what we can do."

Before you
have a baby,
talk to a
woman who's
had more
than 1000.

T

he female obstetricians and certified nurse midwives of
Providence Hospital and Medical Centers have delivered
thousands of babies between them. And they've had a
few of their own, as well. So if you think a woman's touch
would make your birth experience a better one, then you've
come to the right place.

Of course, no matter which gender you prefer (for your
doctor, that is) all of Providence's obstetricians and certified
nurse midwives are highly skilled and experienced. And they
work in some of the most accommodating, comfortable,
family-centered birth facilities in Michigan. Providence
Park in Novi and the New Life Center in Southfield offer the
comforts of home, with the reassurance of state-of-the-art
equipment standing by. For low-risk births, the Family
Birthing Center in Southfield offers a safer alternative
to home birth, providing queen-size beds, Jacuzzi tubs
and sleeping accommodations for family members.
