8 la) R,

fleeing with him were handed over to
the Germans.
In that second attempt to cross the
Swiss border, Sprung and his compan-
ions had false papers to mask their
religion.
But when they arrived in Switzer-
land, they showed their real papers,
thinking they would get asylum more
easily as Jews.
Handed over to the Germans, they
produced their false papers to avoid
detection as Jews.
But German officials knew they
were Jewish — because, Sprung
charged, the Swiss border guards gave
the Germans their real identity papers.
Sprung was dispatched to
Auschwitz, where he managed to sur-
vive the war.

Committee Seeks
Seized Assets

Paris (JTA) — France appointed a
committee to search for millions of
dollars in Jewish assets that were con-
fiscated by the state during World War
II. The committee will investigate
French banks and credit agencies that
held the assets during the war.
French Jewish officials criticized the
move, saying the committee was made
up of former banking officials who
were not objective, and called for the
creation of an independent body that
would employ private auditors.

Prince Charles
To Visit Shul

London (JTA) — The heir to the
British throne is scheduled to attend
an Orthodox service at London's St
John's Wood Synagogue next month
to mark Israel's 50th anniversary.
While members of the British royal
family have attended Jewish events,
the visit by Prince Charles would be
the first time that a senior member of
the family has attended an Orthodox
religious service.

Muslim Charity
Builds Shul

Moscow (JTA) — A new synagogue
that was built with a bequest from a
Moscow-based Muslim charity was
dedicated in the Russian capital.
Including the new Darchei Shalom
Synagogue (Hebrew for Ways of
Peace), there are now four synagogues
operating in Moscow.
