He figures he has assisted almost
100,000 people with the Pledge and
in jumping other hurdles on the road
to becoming Americans.
But now, somebody else will have
to take over the volunteer post he's
held for 15 years at the U.S. District
Court for the Eastern District of
Michigan in Detroit.
"It was hard to leave," the 71-year-
old Ellstein said. "I made a lot of

friends doing this."
Ellstein, a resident of Redford,
began volunteering at the court Mon-
day and Thursday mornings in con-
nection with his membership in Jew-
ish War Veterans.
His paying job, though, was the
reason he was forced to step down.
Ellstein works as a part-time custo-
dian at First Federal of Michigan,
which recently began requiring bank
custodians to be on the job when
tellers arrive at work.
"I used to be able to come in on
Sunday mornings to make sure every-
thing was fine when the bank opened
on Monday. That way I'd be able to
go downtown," he said.
