onservative Jews have always
had options, but now there's
another thrown into the
mix.
The latest edition of the Sim
Shalom siddur gives two versions of
the Amidah prayer — the traditional
all-male prayer and one which
includes the biblical matriarchs.
"It looks beautiful. It clearly is the
result of a huge amount of work," said
Rabbi Daniel Nevins of Adat Shalom
Synagogue, who has seen a copy of the'- ,
siddur.
Test copies of the prayerbook are
being circulated to a few synagogues
— not for corrections, but for reac-
tions. In addition to the two versions
of the Amidah, the siddur has
"improved explanations and format-
ting, songs for Shabbat, a lot of things
that will make the siddur very user-
friendly," said Nevins.

A feminist
spin on a
core prayer.

The Amidah is the core prayer of
Jewish liturgy, consisting of three sec-
tions — praise, petitions to God and
thanksgiving. Amidah means "stand-
ing," so the prayer is said standing.
The first paragraph praises God as the
God of Abraham; Isaac and Jacob; the
new version also includes Sarah,
Rebecca, Rachel and Leah.
Offering an egalitarian Amidah has
been in discussion for years, according
to Rabbi Jerome M. Epstein, executive
vice president of the United
Synagogue of Conservative Judaism
