who rented animals and shipped
them all over the place," he says.
These days he avoids that carnival
atmosphere,
instead preaching
that simplicity is
beauty.
Kowalczyk's
wedding chupahs
are a good exam-
ple.'"I have always
liked trees and tree
branches. For wed-
dings, I've
entwined them
with vines, ivy, and
flowers. I've even
used them to sup-
port antique bed-
spreads and
talleisim."
For modern cel-
ebrations, he offers
three command-
ments for party
decor:
"First get them
at the door.
Embellish the area
you have. It could be something fab-
ulous in a flower arrangement. For
example, I've used huge straw baskets
that I bought at Pier One, each filled
with 200 white gladiolas, the cheap-
est flowers you can buy.

"Now, that works for a summer
garden wedding, but I wouldn't do it
at Temple Israel. In that entry, I
would do a
huge, round
table draped
with a beautiful
cloth, one
gigantic floral
arrangement,
and I'd scatter
petals around it.
"Two, go for
the presentation
and the details.
You can rent
napkins for 75
cents at the
rental store, ands
you can rent
them for $4.50.
Sure the $4.50
ones are the
kicker, but it is
also a matter of
how you knot
them and stack
them.
"Three, pick
the areas where you spend your
money very strategically. The tables
are the most important, whether it is
in the combination of colors or other
unexpected touches. At a catered
party, that's where the action is." O
