activity, but Katz is no stranger to lobbying. He successfully lobbied the federal government for more than $200 million in grants for air- port projects while Wayne County chief of staff. Senator Carl Levin is among those who are confident Katz is the right man for the job. Said Levin, "Dave is a can-do guy, as proven by the critical role he played in the negotiations that led to the current plans to expand Metro Airport, which will be a tremendous boon to the economy of southeastern Michigan." Of the more than 15,000 people who work inside Metro's boundaries for all the different airlines, rental companies and concessionaires, 600 are employees of Wayne County. "The job of airport director requires wearing a lot of hats," said Katz, "but it's a leadership role more than anything. It is a management job — you have to match priorities with resources. "We will have the finest facilities in the world." Katz can't wait to begin his cus- tomer service agenda. "Our clients are the people walking through the air- port. It is a real challenge for this tired, antiquated, crowded old place. Because it is so hard to find your way around, we're going to have customer service reps — human maps — greet you at the door just like at Wal-Mart and Meijers. And we'll create more space for passenger drop-offs and add more lanes. We can't wait four years. We have to get to it today." Born in Kalamazoo, Katz spent his childhood in Livonia. He attended Western Michigan University and graduated from the University of Michigan. His father is Jewish, his mother Irish-Catholic, and Katz is proud of his Jewish heritage. He lives in Grosse Pointe with his wife, Patricia Leonard, a high-profile Wayne County prose- cuting attorney who has won more than 50 murder convictions. "She's the brains of the outfit," said Katz.
