IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR FITNESS for use with migraines. Frustrated, Glickenhaus went to his ear, nose and throat specialist one more time and the doctor referred him to a neurologist. After listing his symptoms, the neurologist told him he had classic migraine symptoms, gave him a prescription and a list of foods to avoid. Glickenhaus filled the prescription, but he also fired up his computer. Once logged onto the Internet, he did a search of everything available on the newly relevant feverfew. "I went into Yahoo and a couple of other search engines and typed in feverfew for migraine headaches," -Glickenhaus says. "I looked under herbal medicine, checked out Dr. Weil's site and several other places." What he found was consistent, pos- itive information that convinced him it was worth trying. Then he did a search of companies that sold the herb. He found some who sold the right potency and type and ordered a couple of bottles by mail. It's been two months and he hasn't had a severe headache since. The few flare-ups he has had have been mild and easily overcome with some stronger prescrip- tion medication. With that success, Glickenhaus has continued to research options online for other medical problems. He's been delighted with the results. As we were speaking, Glickenhaus was typing up a letter to his neurolo- gist, sending him information on feverfew and encouraging him to look into it for his other patients. What started out as an intimidating technol- ogy proved to be a remarkable tool, helping Glickenhaus be more proac- tive in solving his medical problems. And companies now on the Web understand that there are thousands of people like Glickenhaus who are inter- ested in learning more about their ill- nesses — and the options they have in overcoming them. Where to start is usually what people new to the Internet find overwhelming. But there is a variety of useful search engines and other jumping-off points that can lead to a simple and successful search. Start with the big-time search engines: Lycos and Excite. Excite (wwvv.excite.com ) has what they call their Health Channel. With Lycos (vvww.lycos.com), click on Health and you'll get a page with options like Health News, Eating & Exercise and Health Care. The options are endless. ❑ Caron Golden writes for Copley News Service. Let us help you be the best you can be with 1 on 1 training at our club.
