• work with a neurologist (a specialist in
the diagnosis and treatment of disor-
ders of the nervous system) and a neu-
rosurgeon. There also are tumor board
meetings every week that emphasize

Rosenblum is particularly excited
about the Parkinson's disease program.
He hired a surgeon from the Universi-
ty of Toronto who was "one of the
first to perform new FDA-approved
stimulators for Parkinson's disease.
You've got to see some of these results,
people who were devastated and debil-
itated now being able to move." That
particular treatment is used only when
medication fails.
For the spine and neurotrauma pro-
gram, which works with the depart-
K-3
ment of orthopedics and is the fastest-
growing area (it also oversees three of
the city s professional sports teams: the
Lions, Tigers and Red Wings), Rosen-
blum two years ago recruited the head
of spine surgery from the University of
California - San Francisco. He also
recruited the only dual-boarded neu-
rosurgeon/orthopedic surgeon in the
country.
Rosenblum's staff is very loyal.
"He's an extremely charismatic leader
and can look at things from many per-
spectives," says Stacey Folbe, the
administrative manager of the depart-
ment of neurosurgery. Folbe says
Rosenbloom is not only respected by
the staff, the associates and the resi-
dents, but also by the patients.
"From a patient's perspective, he'll
walk into a room, he'll sit down and
nothing else will matter. The patient is
the only person in the world for him,"
says Folbe.
Each program within Rosenblum's
department has a laboratory that
investigates the causes of diseases. "For
example," says Rosenblum, "in the
brain tumor lab we've discovered why
some of the tumors spread throughout
>
the brain and therefore become more
malignant in their behavior.
"We're about to bring out in clini-
cal trial our first treatment to stop it
from spreading. That's one of the first
in the country," he says.
"And we believe that our scientists
have discovered some novel genes
responsible for brain tumor develop-
O ment in the first place."
In the epilepsy area, the department
is trying to block seizures with radia-
tion rather than surgery. "If we can
identify where the epilepsy is corning
from, then maybe we can use radia-
