Zach DeVore, a 10-year-old student at Hillel Day School, swam his 100 yard butterfly in 1:28 seconds. That was good enough to qualify for the United States Swimming 1998 state meet at Rockford High School near Grand Rapids two weeks ago. Zach, who swims with the JCC . Marlins, swam his heat in 1:26.07 to finish 15th in the state's under-12 divi- sion. "It was a very personal best," said Zach. "I came out quick in the first 25 (yards) and just held on from there. It's tough when you go out that quick." While his specialty is the short dis- tance events, he swims all four strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke). Zach also swims the indi- vidual medley, and is on the JCC med- ley and freestyle relay teams. Zach made the cross-state trip with his mom, Carol. "It wasn't the same with my team not cheering me on," he said. Zach is in his second season swim- ming in the winter. He spends summers swimming for Orchard Valley Swim Club in West Bloomfield. He's taking the spring off and will concentrate on baseball and tennis, his two other sports. ❑ , Week 9, March 15 Herzl (4-4) 44, Greenberg D (0-8) 18- Sammy A (3-4-1) 104, Greenberg C (3- 6) 40 Posen(8-1) by forfeit over Kishon A (6- 3) Greenberg A(7-2) 53, Greenberg B 25 Sammy B (5-2-1) 40, Wallenberg (2-4) 27 Jolson A (8-1) 83, Jolson B (2-7) 22 Marx (6-2) 39, Burns (3-5) 34 • Furniture lair r LONNY GOLDSMITH Staff Writer BBYO Basketball • Doors 3/20 1998 Sports S S Leading Scorers Mike Rott, Greenberg A, 29 points; Richie Wallace, Sammy A, and Ben Mutnick, Jolson A, 26 points.
