Singapore, where the ship stayed
two days, is a very impressive, large
city. Skyscraper buildings are modern
and immaculate; service practically
non-pareil; trees and lawns preserved
throughout the business districts.
Symbolic of the crime-free, tolerant
society is the Jewish sector. We visited
Frank Benjamin, vice president of the
Jewish Welfare Board (JWB), the
Jewish community's umbrella organi-
zation overseeing Jewish foundations
including the Menasseh Meyer
Hebrew School.
When the British colonized
Singapore, the Jews were traders from
Holland and Portugal. At the turn of
the century, the Iraqui community
emigrated. The Jewish community
boasted about 4,000 before World
War II; now there are 220 "souls."
Many young people emigrated during
the '60s to Australia, the U.S., Israel
and the U.K.; and their parents fol-
lowed.

Singapore
enjoys a crime-
free, tolerant
society.

The congregation is primarily
Orthodox with some Reform, but old
standards are followed. They follow
Sephardic customs: covering their eyes
and blowing kisses when the Torah is
out "as a mark of respect and love vis a
vis the Torah," and the men holding
their hands out and making a silent
prayer when donning their tallit.
Interestingly, kashruth seems to be
maintained more.
The Jewish community includes
diamond merchants and professionals.
There's no anti-Semitism; there is not
a problem between Ashkenazim and
Sephardim. And there appears to be
minimal intermarriage [out of
Judaism].
Magain Aboth Synagogue is a
white, Sephardic-style synagogue with
central bimah, high vaulted ceiling,
marble floor and cream pillars sport-
ing gilded bands. The temple's lot will
be built into rental apartments in a
few years, probably on the order of
Hong Kong's community, said Edward
Silas, secretary of the JWB.
