Hong Kong sits on land donated at
the century's start by Sir Jacob
Sassoon, of the earliest of the success-
ful "Baghdad' Jewish families; the
synagogue was dedicated to his moth-
er, Leah.

Hong Kong after World War II.
A few years back, Hong Kong's
government wanted to destroy the his-
toric white, domed synagogue to build
a high-rise apartment building. The
local Jewish community protested. A
marvelous compromise was reached.
The land now holds a modern high-
rise owned by the JCC which rents
out 40 upscale apartments. The
income maintains the JCC housed on
the first two floors (the building
opened in September 1995) and the
separate Baghdad-influenced syna-
gogue.
The JCC is now administrative
home to four congregations:

Lawrence Kadoorie purchased the
19th-century Torahs found by a
Catholic friar on Cat Street for
$5,000. Lord Kadoorie's son, Michael,
who owns the Peninsula Hotel,
remains a trustee of the Jewish com-
munity; most of the elderly communi-
ty has died off. (The congregation's
first honorary president was Sir
Matthew Nathan, Hong Kong's only
Jewish governor and the civil engineer
who built Kowloon's main commercial
artery, Nathan Road.)
A later Jewish wave of immigration
reached China after 19th-century
Russian pogroms and during World

Reform, Chabad-Lubavitch with a
12-year presence (three daily minyans
take place in the Furama Hotel),
Orthodox Sephardic and Orthodox
(which conducts services in the old
synagogue).
It's a very transient community,
mostly business people with some aca-
demics and professionals. There are a
full-time youth leader and program
director, a resident mashgiach and a
scholars-in-residence program.
The large library contains fascinat-
ing background on early Chinese
communities. About 100 students,
members of all the congregations,
attend the school. Visitors may buy
