She tried to sit people with groups
that they knew, but found that many
of her guests knew each other.
Although her husband and children
gave the party, they didn't have the
time to plan it. Kukes enjoyed picking
out invitations and favors, and adding
color to the place settings by tying rib-
bons around the napkins.
Kukes, who didn't have a party for
her 40th birthday, was glad she made
the 50th something special. "It felt
like it was a bridal shower," she said.
"I felt like a little child."
When Harriet Saperstein was turn-
ing 60, she decided to throw herself a
party. She was used to celebrating
decade birthdays with a few close
friends and a pot-luck dinners in the
basement. But her 60th was different.
She, too, was struck by the need to
highlight the happy event. Saperstein
wanted to bring together and thank
the many people in her life. "I did it
because celebrations are important. I
didn't want to wait for a funeral."
She invited friends from work, the
American Jewish Committee, Congre-
gation T'chiyah and her Lafayette
Park community. She was pleased to
see that many people from separate
areas of her life knew each other.
She held a champagne toast and
roast, dinner buffet at the Brown Bag
and Eatery Restaurant in Highland
Park where she works as the president
of HPDevco, Inc., a non-profit eco-
nomic development agency. About 90
friends warmed themselves at the
party on a cold January night.
"It was more of a toast than a
roast," she said.
Because she knew what she wanted
and who she wanted to invite, she
made the party for herself, but got lots
of help from her husband and her sec-
retary. "You can't do a big party by
yourself," she said.
While Bershad, Kukes and Saper-
stein felt the need to highlight happy
occasions, catering manager Rosen
doesn't feel the shadow of ambivalence
when she contemplates celebrating her
60th. "I love my work, I'm so happy
in my marriage, I feel like I'm getting
a second chance in life," she said.
Rosen wants to splurge. She's
already told her siblings, in-laws and
children to reserve a September date.
"I'm planning something special," she
said, "and it's on me."
