hen it comes to throw-
ing children's parties,
Debbie Weisserman
knows how to get a

good turnout.
"When my granddaughter
[Rebecca Mansfield]
turned 5, we sent out
birthday party invita-
tions that had lots of
circus animals on them
and asked each invitee
to color it in and bring
it to the party for a
coloring contest,"
Weisserman says.
"Children were so
excited to come and
they all brought the
invitation in hand,"
she says. "And of
course we gave a prize
to each of the kids."
Peggy LaKind also
knows what really
makes young partygo-
ers smile. Forget fancy
meals with various side
dishes, says this mother
and entrepreneur.
"Kids love miniature
pretzels dipped in
chocolate," says
LaKind, who has four
children.
Weisserman, owner
of Deborah's Invitations
in Southfield, and
LaKind, who owns
Platinum Treats in West
Bloomfield, believe that to ensure a
great party for kids under 5, focus on
the details and make them as fun as
possible. Alia parents also contend
that details, such as party length and
time of day, rate as some of the most
important planning factors. From
invitations to snacks, your party par-
ticulars can make or break junior's
special day.

From the minute a child opens his
or her party invitation, images of
balloons, confetti, donkey tails, can-
dles and frosting fill his mind. The c / \
partygoer also dreams about mon-
keys, cowboy boots, tap dancing and
beauty salons. Yes, beauty salons.
"Sure," says Weisserman, "invita-
tions can be tailored for any theme,
even something as unusual as a beau-
ty parlor party." She cites one of her
favorite invitations that reads, "I'm
having a birthday party for the girls,
make-up, nails and some curls." The .--\
creative host of this party held the
shindig at an actual beauty parlor.

Recently, Weisserman created invi-
tations for a gathering at Kaput
Kapot, a ceramic painting store in
Birmingham where attendees become
little Picassos while brushing colors
on ceramic figurines.
Other fun invitation and party
themes include birthday parties for
magic fans and gatherings for horse
and holster lovers.
