But why wait for your wedding day
to don a long fancy gown? Today's
bat mitzvah girls are making quite anc \
entrance at their teenage celebra-
tions.
Long dresses are de rigueur on the
bat mitzvah circuit and we're talking
beaded, bare, spaghetti-strapped ball
gowns.
"Last year was
short and fancy;
this year is defi-
nitely long, full
and elaborate,"
says Cinderella
Castle's owner
and longtime
party dress con-
sultant Linda
Goudsmit. Black
and ivory are
classic color
favorites but
Linda urges the
bat mitzvah to
wear a color that
will set her apart
on the dance
floor and in pho-
tographs.
"Smoky blues
and lilac are
important this
spring," she says.
Other trends
include stretch
lace and velvet
gowns and bead-
ed satins.
Linda points out that as party
dresses have gotten fancier, attire for
services is more casual. "We used to
sell suits for services, but now the
girls are opting for skirts and
sweaters."
Rachel Morris, whose bat mitzvah
is scheduled for May 9 at Temple
Beth El, will dazzle her friends - in a
long black stretch velvet dress that is
flirty enough to make her grin at her
reflection and demure enough to suit
her mom, Cyndy. "It's my dream
dress," says Rachel as she pirouettes
in front of the mirror.
Expect to spend between $200
and $400 for a special bat mitzvah
dress, says Linda. "We've even cus-
torn ordered some $700 gowns."
