ENLIGHTENING
ILLUMINATIONS
Ask Rabbi Yonah Weinrib what
word comes to mind when he thinks
of Purim, and you will hear "chess."
The connection between the holi-
day and the game is not by chance.
The rabbi, who earns his living as an
artist, applies his scholarly learning to
Judaica projects and comes up with
new and defining images.
His latest work — "The Megillah
of Redemption, An Illuminated
Megillat Esther Scroll and Kohelet" —
was commissioned by a private collec-
tor in California. Although it won't be
finished until 1999, parts of it are on
display through July 31 at the Yeshiva
University Museum in New York.
"I use my rabbinic training to get a
better understanding of text and por-
tray a subject appropriately," the rabbi
said. "Chess is a series of moves and
counter moves, and I think that corn-
pares with the story of Purim."
Rabbi Weinrib depicts the key play-
ers of the Purim story as chessboard
pieces, carefully plotting their moves
in this telling of the deliverance of the
Jews of the Persian Empire from exter-
mination.
"The work is an expression of the
diversity of Jewish thought and schol-
arship as well as an artistic interpreta-
tion and visual Midrash," the rabbi
said.
"Illumination in Judaica is more
than enhancing a traditional text with
beautiful artwork; the colors and hues
are merely a backdrop for the treasures
found within the text itself. They
complement its messages and illumi-
nate their intent."

LOONY TUNES
Whoever thought a gig as summer-
camp song leaders would blossom into
a full-fledged career in the children's
entertainment industry? For Canada's
husband-and-wife musical act Judy &
David (Gershon), the camp culture
was the impetus that sparked their
desire to perform for kids.
The Toronto-based duo have six
albums to their credit, the latest titled
Livin' In A Shoe. Released in Novem-
ber and touted as one of the freshest,
funniest, most inventive recordings for
kids around, Shoe was recently named
one of the top 10 albums of 1997 by
Child magazine.
Their musical success does not
come as a surprise, however. Judy has
degrees in teaching and piano perfor-
mance from the University of Toronto
and was an associate of Canada's Royal
Conservatory of Music. David was
director of business development for a
children's entertainment company. But
when the two met while teachinc, at a
Toronto Sunday school, it was instant
harmony.
"Our best songwriting is done as a
team," says David. "I'm the total
music clown/hack. I'm good at start-
ing crazy ideas for songs and melodies.
