Celebrate the 50th Aniversary of Israel with atsh ua srae Saturday, March 21, 8 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 4 p.m. Power Center with additional support from Herb and Carol Amster. Sponsored by presents essays about decorated vehi- cles entered into the parade of cars held each April in Houston. He finds the vehicles with religious depictions of special interest, although he has not seen any that have to do with his own Jewish background. Tepper, whose works remain in museum collections from St. Louis to Switzerland, has set aside the tableware forms and taken on a new project for the millennium — sculptural teardrops. Again using porcelain but also combining earthenware and bronze into the mix, Tepper gives two sides to the tears — one for the positive expe- riences going into the next century and the other for the negative. "An important theme over the years has been people's relationship to soci- ety'," said Tepper, who has associated himself with causes south of the American border. In the late '80s and early '90s, he brought medicines to poverty-stricken people in Nicaragua and Guatemala. He got relatives to donate antibiotics and drove around both countries to deliver them. "It was a very frightening experi- ence, and, [through it all], I was able to take a lot of pictures," Tepper said. The artist is getting ready to take more photos, this time with a happier theme. As April approaches, he is thinking about the llth art car parade in Houston and anticipates seeing some innovative designs just right to expand his picture collection. ❑ Iry Tepper's cups and teapots will be shown through April 18 at the Sybaris Gallery, 202 East Third Street, Royal Oak. A reception for the artist is planned between 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 14. (248) 544-3388. Mikhail khait Pietne t) conductor 24, 8 p.m Tuesday I March 24 .
