Generational
Jig

t wasn't a typical Saturday
night, but it sure was fun — at
least according to the 21 young
adults who danced and
schmoozed with about 60 seniors at
the Fleischman Residence in West
Bloomfield.
The cross-generational party on
Feb. 28, 7:30 until 9 p.m., included a
participatory Havdalah service led by
Rabbi Avie Shapiro, and dance lessons
by Joe Cornell. The Young Adult
Division of the Jewish Federation
sponsored the event.
"The program was inspired by a
need for different volunteer opportu-
nities — young adults really want to
do their part in the community," said
Marc Berke, Campaign associate.
Barbara Tunick, Fleischman's assis-
tant administrator and an active
member of YAD, raved about it.
"It filled my heart to see young

adults spending time with older
adults," she said. "Literally, you
walked in the door and you could -
sense the sense of community that
people felt together. It was so much
nachas. The part that touched me
even more was that since I was the
organizer, people called me the next
day to tell me how much they
enjoyed it and how much some of
them maybe weren't exactly looking
forward to coming but made a com-
mitment to doing it, and how much
they enjoyed it and were looking for-
ward to doing it in the future. Some
even exchanged numbers [with Fleis-
chman residents] and might take
them out."
The event took place in the Blum-
berg Plaza, Fleischman's lobby. YAD
members sat and kibbitzed with resi-
dents who weren't up to dancing.
