the synagogue.

director of the Center for Armenian
Research at U-M Dearborn and a facul-
ty member of the Russian Research
Center in Ann Arbor.

Special Showing
Of Video Diary

The University of Michigan Hillel and
the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor will
present the film A Healthy Baby Girl
7:30 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Hillel.
Filmmaker Judith Helfand will intro-
duce the film and will answer questions
following the screening.
At the age of 25, filmmaker Judith
Helfand was diagnosed with cervical
cancer and had to undergo a radical
hysterectomy — the result of her mother
taking the anti-miscarriage drug diethyl-
stilbestrol (DES) while pregnant. Only
in 1971, when doctors discovered a link
between DES and vaginal cancer in
some women exposed in utero, did the
FDA withdraw approval for the use of
the drug during pregnancy.
After surgery, Judith went home to
her family in Merrick, Long Island, to
heal and recorded her five-year video
diary. The film is free and open to all
and is being co-sponsored by the
Michigan Student Assembly and U-M
Theme Semester on the Environment.
