citizens yet," Luger said. "We haven't
had to use this plan yet but it's avail-
able."
Holidays are special at Yad Ezra.
"We use them to bring Judaism into
the home and into people's lives
through special foods," Ryke said. For
example, hamantashen and other
treats were in this week's food pack-
ages in celebration of Purim — a fes-
tive holiday where giving gifts to the
needy is a tradition. Passover packages
include seder foods plus a holiday
guidebook (Russian versions are avail-
able).
Like a proud mentor, Luger dotes
on her volunteers: "They keep us
going. They touch people's lives. They
really do make a difference. And they
go home feeling better about them-
selves."
Take Phil Elkus, a Farmington Hills
resident who became a volunteer in
1991, shortly after retiring. He's a
shmoozer with a heartfelt story to tell:
"I remember my father dying when I
was 8 and the shul in Cincinnati
where we lived giving us money so we
could keep Pesach. When I see moth-
ers coming in with their kids, it's like
a flashback. I try to make everyone's
visit as warm as possible. I kibbitz, I
joke. It's not easy getting up the
courage to come here. I just try to
make the day a little better for those
who do."
