Poppy or prune hamentashen? Let the experts decide.

A legal struggle over land on which
members of Congregation B'nai
David want to build a new temple is
proceeding, albeit slowly, in Oakland
County Circuit Court.
Battle lines were drawn in Novem-
ber, when limited partners in the
property on Maple Road, between
Halsted and Haggerty, sued the three
general partners, all former congre-
gants of B'nai David. They claim the
latter have refused to honor an agree-
ment to transfer the property to them
once they raised the money for a new
building.
Depositions of the defendants con-
tinue.

Poppy or prune hamentashen? Puz-
zled by the meaning of each? Sure you
are. So join Rabbi Joseph Klein of
Temple Emanu-El and Rabbi Steven
Berg of the National Conference of
Synagogue Youth at 10 a.m. Sunday,
March 15, for a debate on the matter.
The event takes place at Temple
Emanu-El, 14450 W. 10 Mile Road in
Oak Park.

Congregation Beth Achim will host a
memorial service marking shloshim for

memory will always be with us," said

Aaron, which later merged with Con-
gregation Ahavas Achim.

Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation
League stopped by The Jewish News
before giving a public address at the
Kahn Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield last week. The Hot
Topics lecture was jointly sponsored
by The Jewish News, the JCC and the
ADL-Michigan Region.
Foxman, a Holocaust survivor,
joined the ADL after graduating from
law school 32 years ago. He's been
national director for 10 years.
On the issue of Orthodox control
over conversions in Israel, Foxman
told The Jewish News staff: "Israelis
don't begin to understand how much
American Jews want respect and love
and a reciprocal feeling as to who and
what they are."
For 2,000 years, Jews were defend-
ed by others. "Then they got their
own state. But what did Israeli leader-

ship do? They had a great opportunity
to define who is a Jew but instead
postponed it and didn't make a deci- -
sion," he said. "Now, 50 years later,
Israel still doesn't want to deal with it
except in a simplistic manner, even
though we want to deal with it in a
more serious manner."

their home squash court in the Michi-
gan State Squash Championships.
The event, held at the Kahn JCC
