Amir Lieberman, a young software developer, and Tamir Segal, owner and managing director of the Makh- shevet software firm in Herzliya, have produced a lie-detector on a disk. Called Truster, the program is installed on your- personal computer; the person whose probity is to be checked can speak into the computer microphone (the disadvantage being that he will then know he is being examined) or a recording of his voice can be checked. Even better: Have a phone line near the computer. Attach a special switch between your phone and your computer and test your interlocutor's honesty without him knowing (for best results). Giving the system a sample of a minute's ordinary conversation before testing for honesty will make the results more accurate. This, say Segal and Lieberman, is not against the law in any coun- try, as the conversation is not being recorded without some- one's knowledge. Want to know if Bibi loves Sara? He does, very much, according to Truster's analysis of the prime minister's defense of his problematic wife. Was David Levy offered a top position on the Labor Party tick- et, despite his adamant denials? Yes, he was, according to Truster. Does Bibi, . despite his used-car-dealer reputation, tell the truth? Well, says Truster's analysis of numerous statements, there are many things he says that he him- self does not believe. For example, says Segal, he doesn't have faith that he'll be able to reach a peace agreement with the Palestinians. Did Sara's housekeeper tell the truth when she claimed Sara threw shoes at her? Truster says the woman exaggerat- ed when she said she was actually hit, but Sara did throw the shoes in her direction. He conceived of the program, which is based on algorithms for which patent applications have been filed here and abroad, as an applica- tion for questioning suspected terror- ists. Instead, he has produced a pro- gram that is a political commentator's m g gold mine. Makhshevet was estab- " lished by a group of educators in 1981, when computers were ridicu- lously primitive. It produced simple programs on floppy, 5.25-inch diskettes and computer instruction books. Segal bought it in 1991, and it has since produced 20 original educational programs and games for young chil- dren, and has translated numerous foreign disks into Hebrew. But in the age of the Internet, when users can get free entertainment on line, CD- ROMs have to offer something special for a customer to buy them. Translat- ing an original program with a lot of text into many languages to sell abroad is very expensive. But Truster, with little text, can easily be translat-* ed, and in fact there are already Hebrew, English, RLthsian, German, Slovak and Czech versions; a Japanese edition will appear in March. A year ago, Lieberman brought his project to Segal, who jumped at the idea. He invested a lot of money in research and development, and a sepa- rate Makhshevet subsidiary -- called Truster — is being set up to handle '‘ Truster products, some of which have already gone on the market. What is the difference between the polygraph machine, used by police detectives, and Truster? The poly- graph, which costs around $10,000, is a system that checks pre-determined •
